An estimated 900,000 Americans are living with HIV/AIDS and 40,000 new infections occur each year. The incidence of HIV among women in the United States has nearly doubled in the last 10 years, making it one of the leading causes of death in women between the ages of 25-44. African American women and Latinas account for over 70,000 new AIDS cases annually, and are disproportionately affecting much greater numbers of Asian women. Moreover, 63% of all new AIDS cases among children under the age of 13 years are African American and 23% among Latinos. We are hemorrhaging as communities of color, and there is still no cure for AIDS.

We would be honored to have you join us for dinner on Tuesday, April 18. The African American Women Health and Education Foundation deeply appreciate the generous support of our sponsors without whom we would not be able to succeed in our important work.

Information about the 5K AIDS Walk

UCLA Government and Community Relations (GCR) invites all members of the UCLA community to join Team UCLA in this year's annual "5K AIDS Walk for Minority Women and Children." The event is cosponsored every year by Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald and the African American Women Health and Education Foundation. The event will take place on Sat., April 22 and usually begins at 9am.

The proceeds from the event benefit several clinics treating AIDS patients: Charles Drew Oasis Clinic, Harbor-UCLA Pediatrics AIDS Unit, T.H.E. Clinic, Watts Healthcare Corp, Long Beach Memorial Pediatrics AIDS Clinic and the Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team.

The event is held at Cal State Dominguez Hills every year and attracts 3,000-5,000 walkers. Our team has grown exponentially every year, and we expect this year to be the largest team yet. We expect to have over 150 students, alumni, faculty and staff participating in this year's walk.

Please contact Michael Swords, Assistant Director of Federal Relations at (310) 794-6829.
