On Saturday, May 17, 2008, UCLA's Government and Community Relations (GCR) team joined with community partners NAACP – Compton Branch, the Concerned Citizens of Compton, the Pastors of Compton, and the National Association for Equal Justice in America (NAEJA) to host several important candidate forums for the residents of Compton and surrounding communities. Candidates from the 52 nd Assembly District, 25 th State Senate District, 2 nd County Supervisorial District, and 37 th US Congressional District were present. They candidly discussed why they believe they are best to represent the district seat they seek. Over 120 community members showed up from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Transit Center to learn more about their future local, state, and federal representatives.
The issues of most importance to the community were regaining local control of what was once Compton Community College , restoring the quality-of-care at Martin Luther King Jr. – Harbor Hospital (King/Drew Medical Center), economic revitalization, and public safety. The event was an opportunity for the community to engage in meaningful discussion with their next representatives, and enjoy light refreshments on a warm Saturday afternoon.
