2nd Annual Town & Gown Best Practices Conference

Additional Information:

On October 11-12, 2007 in UCLA Covel Commons, UCLA Community & Local Government Relations will host the 2nd Annual Town & Gown Conference. The conference, sponsored by the League of California Cities, University of California, California State University, Playa Vista, and Englander & Associates, will focus on best practices pertaining to issues in economic development, planning and land use, and student conduct.

Last year's conference hosted by UC Davis and initiated by Mayor Tom Bates of Berkeley and Mayor Ronald O.Loveridge of Riverside attracted over 200 elected officials and their staff, governmental departments, and univerisity officials to discuss prime issues in housing and transportation.

The conference features keynote speakers in noted economist Joe Cortright, making his presentation "City Advantage: The Role of Place in the Knowledge Economy" and UC Santa Barbara Vice Chancellor Michael Young making his presentation "Millennials at College and in the Workplace".

  • GROUND TRANSPORTATION TO UCLA

Attendees are responsible for providing their own ground transportation to and from Covel Commons and/or hotel to the airport. Due to heightened security measures, airlines suggest you arrive at least 90 minutes prior to your departure.

Ground transportation to and from the Los Angeles International airport (LAX) to the Covel Commons conference center and/or hotels in the Westwood area can be arranged via taxi or the Westwood FlyAway service. You will note that Covel Commons is located in Grid C3 of the UCLA map.

The FlyAway service is a sky-blue bus that says “Westwood FlyAway,” which stops at all terminals at LAX every 30 minutes. You can learn more about the FlyAway by visiting http://www.lawa.org/lax/LAXFlyAway-Westwood.html. The FlyAway service stops at Structure 32 in Westwood Village. (See Grid D8 on UCLA map) The service is $4 each way per person. From Structure 32, a Town-Gown Conference shuttle bus will take you to Covel Commons, Hotel Luxe, and the UCLA Guest House (see "Transportation Around the UCLA Campus During the Conference" for more details)

  • TRANSPORTATION AROUND THE UCLA CAMPUS DURING THE CONFERENCE

On both Thursday and Friday, there will be a shuttle making loops every 20-25 minutes between Covel Commons (the conference site), the Hotel Luxe and UCLA Guest House, and the FlyAway stop at Structure 32. The shuttle will be marked "Town & Gown Conference". “Shuttle Stop” signs will be posted as well.

  • On Thursday the shuttle will begin running at the Flyaway stop at Structure 32 at 12:00 p.m.
  • On Friday the shuttle will begin running at the Flyaway stop at Structure 32 at 7:00 a.m.

  • PARKING

If you are coming to the conference via ground transportation, please proceed to Parking Structure SV (PSV, Grid C3 on the UCLA map) for complimentary parking. The parking attendant will give you your parking pass and direct you on where to go.

  • DIRECTIONS

From 405 Freeway, exit on Sunset Blvd. Head East. Turn RIGHT on Bellagio Drive. Turn LEFT on De Neve Drive. Sunset Village Parking Structure will be on your right hand side. Take the elevator to the Lobby level and follow signs to Covel Commons.

FULL CONFERENCE ATTENDEES

If you are attending both Thursday and Friday, Thursday check-in is from 1:30pm to 2:30pm on the 3rd Floor of Covel Commons. Lunch will not be provided.

FRIDAY ONLY ATTENDEES

If you are only attending Friday sessions, check-in is from 8:00am to 8:45am on the 3rd Floor of Covel Commons, with a complimentary continental breakfast.
