UC Opposes AB 2951
The University of California is opposed to AB 2951 (Goldberg), and has initiated advocacy efforts to help defeat the bill. If passed, AB 2951 would allow California’s municipal utilities to unilaterally increase capital facilities fees assessed state and public educational agencies with no burden to prove the need for or the amount of those capital fees and with no regulatory oversight. ...more
Governor Releases May Budget Revision
Governor Schwarzenegger has released the revised version of his 2006-07 budget based on actual state revenues. Unexpected addition revenue has resulted in an increase of $5.5 billion in the state budget. The total package now stands at $131.1 billion for Fiscal Year 2006-2007. ...more

Legislature Considers Bond Bills
The state legislature is currently considering bills that would place a series of general obligation bonds on either the June or November, 2006 ballot. If approved by two thirds of both houses in the state legislature, the bonds would then need to receive 50% (plus one) of the votes on election day to pass. The bonds will fund for public school construction at campuses from Kindergarten to University. Each campus in the UC system will receive funds to support its capital program

National Defense Education and Innovation Initiative
With Washington policymakers now focusing on how to ensure America’s competitiveness by strengthening research and education, UCLA is using the AAU white paper on competitiveness, “National Defense Education and Innovation Initiative: Meeting America’s Economic and Security Challenges in the 21st Century” as a means to help ensure that research universities are an integral part of this conversation.
PACE Legislative Package Introduced
A bipartisan group of four Senators introduced a package of three bills on January 25 aimed at bolstering the nation's competitiveness, in part by authorizing significant increases in federal funding for the physical sciences and engineering research and education. Other provisions include a proposal for a new student visa for doctoral candidates in the physical sciences and engineering and a Sense of the Senate statement supporting the National Academies' recommendation to retain the basic research exemption with respect to controls on deemed exports. The package, termed "Protecting America's Competitive Edge (PACE)," is based largely on the recommendations of the National Academies' recent report, "Rising Above the Gathering Storm." It was introduced by Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), Pete Domenici (R-NM), and Barbara Mikulski (D-MD). National Innovation Act Introduced
Senators John Ensign (R-NV) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) recently introduced comprehensive bipartisan legislation that will ensure the United States remains the lead in innovation, research and development and the training of scientists and engineers. The National Innovation Act, which is based on “Innovate America,” The Council on Competitiveness’ National Innovation Initiative Report, focuses on three primary areas of importance to maintaining and improving United States’ innovation in the 21st Century: research investment, increasing science and technology talent and developing an innovation infrastructure. ...more
