UC Sponsors Priority State Legislation

Each Year the University of California sponsors state legislation to benefit UC. These bills are among the highest legislative priorities of the year. This year, UC is sponsoring SB 1520 (Ducheny), an urgency measure that will ensure the UC Heath System can effectively implement Medi-Cal hospital finance waiver legislation. Specifically, the bill clarifies that the UCLA Medical Center, and the four other UC academic medical centers, are defined as a system for the purposes of the Medi-Cal waiver. On March 29, the bill passed the Senate Health Committee and it now heads to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

UC will be continuing efforts begun last year to pass SB 667 (Migden). This bill will allow the University to select the lowest responsible bidder for a construction project on the basis of the best combination of price, qualifications, experience, and management competency. UC con

Finally, the University will also be pursuing efforts during this legislative session, to reauthorize the California Subject Matters projects (CSMP), and to expand the Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE). These programs assist students who plan to become math, science and special education teachers.
