Governor Releases May Budget Revision
May 12, 2006
Today Governor Schwarzenegger released the revised version of his 2006-07 budget based on actual state revenues. Unexpected addition revenue has resulted in an increase of $5.5 billion in the state budget. The total package now stands at $131.1 billion for Fiscal Year 2006-2007. The May Revision for the University of California remains in line with the 2004 compact between UC, CSU and the Governor.
The budget gives additional funds to UC to help address the shortage of clinical nurses in California. For both the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU), the May Revision proposes $1 million from the state General Fund to provide funding on a one-time basis for
faculty recruitment and start-up costs associated with the expansion of undergraduate and
graduate nursing programs. These resources will enable UC and CSU to expand capacity in both undergraduate and graduate
nursing programs to help address California's nursing shortage. This will include reestablishing an undergraduate nursing program at UCLA.
This funding is in addition to the $1.7 million that was provided to both UC and CSU through Chapter 592 of the Statutes of 2005, and continued in the Governor's Budget, to support a minimum of 130 additional full-time equivalent students (FTES) in entry-level master's degree programs.
In addition, the May Revision proposes an increase of $300,000 in Proposition 99 funds to provide UC additional funding for tobacco-related
research.
