UC Supports ACR 21
March 6, 2007
Last week, the University of California took a "support" position on ACR 21, authored by Assembly Member Anthony Portantino (D-La Canada). The resolution, urges UC to establish academic exchanges or partnerships with Historically Black Colleges
and Universities (HBCUs). While several UC campuses (including UCLA) already have programs with HBCU's, the University welcomes the legislature's interest and support in this area.
UCLA operates two programs with HBCU's. The Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA conducts an eight-week Summer Humanities Institute. The program is open to upper-division undergraduates (juniors or
seniors), and students who have completed a baccalaureate degree in any field
and have not yet begun his/her first year of a graduate school program, particularly those who plan to pursue a Ph.D. in the humanities or humanistic social sciences.
Similarly, the UCLA Graduate Division administers the UCLA NSF AGEP Summer Research Scholars (SRS). This program, funded by a National Science
Foundation AGEP grant, sponsors underrepresented undergraduates and master's
students to participate in hands-on research with leading UCLA faculty in
science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Priority entry into this program is given to applicants who are attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), Minority Serving Institutions (MSI), Tribal Colleges and Universities Programs (TCUP) or California State Universities (CSU).
UC San Diego is engaged in an exchange program with Morehouse College and Spelman College, both in
Atlanta, Georgia. The program’s purpose is to provide an opportunity for students to live and study at
institutions of higher learning that are significantly different from their own social and educational
environment. S
UC Berkeley participates in an exchange program with both Fisk University and Spelman College.
Through this program, students in social science majors at those institutions may apply to spend a
semester at UC Berkeley, taking upper division courses in their specific areas of research interest. Berkeley also operates an
exchange program with Howard University in Washington, DC. Designed for undergraduates, this onesemester
exchange program has been established for declared majors in the College of Letters & Science.
UC Santa Barbara has a formal memorandum of understanding with Jackson State University (JSU).
Signed in the summer of 2005, the memorandum outlines goals of an “Education and Research Program”
whose purpose is to encourage and enhance graduate education and research collaborations between the
two institutions.
Additionally, the College of Engineering at UCSB, in partnership with JSU, has
received a $2.75 million award from the National Science Foundation’s Partnerships for Research and
Education in Materials program. Through this five-year grant, the two institutions will collaborate to
develop and apply new materials research in organic semiconductors and optical nanosystems and focus.
