UCLA Honors Councilmember Herb Wesson

May 3, 2006

The Community & Local Government Relations unit hosted a community reception for newly elected Los Angeles City Councilman Herb Wesson (10 th District). This first-of-its-kind reception by the unit served to introduce him to UCLA Community Programs and alumni located in his district. An ethnically diverse crowd of over one-hundred and fifty gathered at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center in the Mid-City portion of the district, which also encompasses Koreatown and West Adams .

In his remarks, Councilman Wesson stated “I want to thank UCLA for hosting this reception for me; as a kid, I never could have imagined that one day a great university like this could honor me in this way. As I look into the crowd this evening, I see all kinds of people: tall, short, different ages and colors. The 10 th District is the most diverse district in the city.” He also went on to say that he wanted to establish a formal relationship between UCLA's Performing Arts and the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center. Standing together at the podium to recognize UCLA alumni at the event were UCLA's Asian Pacific Alumni President Mike Fong and Black Alumni Association President Mandla Kayise.

Associate Vice Chancellor Frank Gilliam, who manages UCLA's Center for Community Partnerships, addressed the audience and gave an overview of the center's community partnerships, grant awards, and long-term mission to develop and sustain projects that continue to connect UCLA to communities like those in the 10 th District. Mary Keipp, Director of UCLA's Community Based Learning program, and a constituent of the district, told the audience that of the hundreds of underserved youth the program is able to educate, train and prepare for career opportunities, many of them come from the 10 th District.
