UCLA Reception Honoring Councilmember Jose Huizar

UCLA's Community and Local Government Relations and the School of Law partnered to host a reception honoring stellar Law alumnus and newly elected 14th District Councilmember Jose Huizar on May 17, 2006. Over 100 UCLA alumni and community members attended the event at the historic Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights. Also in attendance were Felipe Agredano-Lovano, Garvey Board of Education ; Hector Cabrera, Board of Directors, Sylmar Neighborhood Councils ; Susan Prager, UCLA School of Law- Dean Emeritus ; Commissioner Cynthia M. Ruiz, President of the Board of Public Works ; and County of Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Sotelo.
The reception' s program provided an excellent opportunity to recognize Councilmember Huizar as well as highlight UCLA's commitment to community partnerships throughout Greater Los Angeles. After Assistant Vice Chancellor Keith Parker and Principal Cecilia Quemada welcomed guests, Michael Schill, Dean UCLA School of Law, highlighted several outstanding programs that represent the quality and depth of UCLA 's level of community service in the 14 th Council District. Th e parternerships highlighted were UCLA Extension's Spanish-Language Journalism Certificate Program, Design for Sharing, BruinCorps, the Riordan Programs and Law Fellows Early Academic Outreach Program. In addition, Law alumnus, Judge Sotelo shared with the Councilmember and audience the number of UCLA alumni, students, faculty and staff that currently reside in the 14th district.
In his remarks, the Councilmember thanked and acknowledged the University for its presence and commitment to his council district, with UCLA alumni and community leaders echoing the same sentiment.
