UCLA Center X and Los Angeles unified school local district 7 secondary literacy
June 23, 2006
Recently, Community and Local Government Relations (CLGR) staff learned about a unique UCLA community partnership in Greater Los Angeles. UCLA Center X and Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) work together to improve the academic performance of high school students in Local District 7 by providing professional development for teachers.
During several meetings, CLGR staff heard how UCLA teaching coaches support K-12 teachers in Fremont and Jordan High Schools. The coaches specifically discussed how individualized sessions are an excellent vehicle for sharing effective teaching strategies with new urban school teachers. Examples of successful individualized coaching sessions have focused on lesson planning, standards, literacy, writing and technology. These individualized coaching sessions are especially valuable to Fremont High School teachers where two-thirds of them have approximately three years experience. During the meeting at Fremont High, several new teachers publicly acknowledged the important role these UCLA coaches have played in their retention.
