The Ethnic Coalition recognizes los angeles world airports executive Director

July 12, 2006

On June 29, 2006, UCLA's office of Community and Local Government Relations was privileged to support The Ethnic Coalition (TEC) in the coordination of a reception to recognize Executive Director of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), Lydia Kennard. Established in 1988, TEC was founded by a group of concerned professionals to research issues and to provide input to public officials regarding the impact of public policy decisions on ethnic communities.

The reception was held at the Los Angeles City Club at Bunker Hill , Downtown Los Angeles. Among the many noted attendees was UCLA School of Public Affairs Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Fernando Torres-Gil. Dr. Torres-Gil, who respectfully decline being honored as well, along with being an academic scholar and a pioneer in the field of public policy serves as a member of TEC and the Board of Airport Commissioners. While introducing Lydia Kennard, he had the honor to recognize her many accomplishments over the years.

Lydia Kennard returned to the office of Executive Director early this year. Having served three previous terms, Kennard is pleased to once again be working with a Mayor who shares her three major priorities for LAWA: 1) enhancing public safety and security, 2) developing a regional plan for accommodating passenger and cargo growth, and 3) continuing to assure that LAWA supports the region's thriving economy. During her keynote speech she addressed the challenges of running the four Los Angeles airports during this age of heightened security and the positive reinforcement she was given by the many people of color in Los Angeles politics along her career path.

At its closing, participants left the reception with a feeling of pride in Los Angeles and its many offerings for those with initiative, scholarly aptitude and a cohesive support system. There was also a sense of kinship among the attendees who learned of UCLA's commitment to minority success.
