Student Heightening Academic Performance through education
July 27, 2006
The UCLA SHAPE (Student Heightening Academic Performance Through Education) program provides tutoring and mentoring after school services to K-12 students at Roger's Park in Inglewood. Operating Monday through Thursday from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m., the program is usually staffed by five UCLA students and serves, on average, 20 K-12 students.
UCLA's Community and Local Government Relations office has visited with SHAPE in the Spring Quarter to further determine how a collaboration between the two could increase outreach efforts in Inglewood. Discussions centered around finding resources to update equipment and materials at the SHAPE office in Roger's Park and mobilizing alumni and friends in the area to help in outreach activities.
Inglewood city officials and several community agencies have already given support to UCLA outreach efforts and continue to be open to exploring additional partnerships in the area of education, youth development and job training. It is clear that UCLA's outreach efforts are appreciated and supported by community and civic leaders in Inglewood . The opportunity to expand the partnerships even further is encouraging.
