Public Interest Programs at the School of Law

October 1, 2006

UCLA is situated in a unique city that is a living laboratory for every conceivable social challenge. The School encourages students to take advantage of both the UCLA campus and the city to become involved in activities in the community. It has sought to cultivate an environment that encourages students to serve society in a myriad of ways.

To learn more about how this is being accomplished, during the summer of 2006, CLGR staff met with Catherine Mayorkas, the Director of the School of Law 's Office of Public Interest Programs, to discuss the research center's activities.

The program provides a variety of opportunities through a pro bono program, clinical courses, an externship program, extensive public interest advising and informational programming, and numerous student organizations, strengthening the relationship between the School and the greater Los Angeles community and to nurture in all of its students a public service ethic that students will carry with them throughout their professional lives.

On October 4, the Office will host a forum to discuss and debate the upcoming propositions in the 2006 general election. This forum provides the community and students with an opportunity to engage experts on these various topics about issues and concerns that affect their quality of life. The aforementioned program is just one of the many by the Center to promote community involvement.
