Watts Day of Public Service

December 2, 2006

On November 18th , more than 100 UCLA students, alumni and staff gathered in Watts to support Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's (77') day of service to the community.  The Office of Government and Community Relations in conjunction with the Office of Residential Life and the Community Service Commission worked together to assemble the volunteers to support the Mayor, which represented the largest contingency of any single group of university volunteers.

The day began with a welcome from Mayor Villaraigosa and Councilmember Janice Hahn whose district incorporates the Watts area.  Given the numbers of volunteers, the UCLA group was assigned to the Jordan Downs Housing Projects to assist in the removal of graffiti, planting of trees, cleaning of the area's sand boxes, creation of a healing garden and removal of trash.  The Bruin experience actually expanded beyond their assigned duties of the day as they were able to interact with area residents as well.
