UCLA Alumni Elected to State Office

When the state legislature was sworn in last week, 14 members from both sides of the aisle had something in common: They are all Bruins. During the November general election, seven UCLA Alumni won seats in the Senate. They join Sheila Kuehl, who was not up for election this year. Alumni Senators Sam Aanestad, Dean Florez, and Gil Cedillo were reelected to their seats, while alumni Patricia Wiggins, Darrel Steinberg, Lou Correa and Ronald Calderon all moved up to the Senate after being termed out of the Assembly. The eight Bruins make up 20% of the entire State Senate!
There are now six UCLA alumni in the State Assembly, incumbents Mimi Walters, Todd Spitzer and Roger Neillo are joined by freshman members Laura Richardson, Anna Caballero, and Mike Eng.
Meanwhile, alumni Assemblymember Judy Chu, won election to the State Board of Equalization, her husband, alumnus Mike Eng replaced her in the State Assembly. The full list of Bruins now in the state legislature is as follows:

Cultivation of newly elected legislators will continue into 2007. New members and legislative leadership being will be targeted for visits by the Chancellor in January, during UC Day in Sacramento in March, and during other advocacy trips throughout the year.
