Knowledge Symposium Hosted by UCLA

On Saturday, February 10, 2007, Educate LA with the assistance of UCLA Local Government and Community Relations held its much anticipated Knowledge Symposium in the Ackerman Union Grand Ballroom.

The Symposium started off with the arrival of over 50 exhibit vendors providing material and information that heightened awareness of the services and learning products available to K-12 students and their parents. The services and products available consisted of scholarships to attend private high schools, free college planning programs, free tutorial classes, children's books, K-12 educational reading and learning tools, such as work-study books and interactive learning software, free SAT and ACT preparatory classes and financial assistance workshops that many participants raved about.

Also in attendance were representatives from California Universities, historically black colleges and community colleges. UCLA was also well represented during the event with exhibitors from the UCLA Bruin Corps., UCLA Early Academic Outreach Program, UCLA Center for Community College Partnership and UCLA Community Based Learning Program.

The Educate LA Knowledge Symposium drew in over 500 hundred participants throughout the day. There were many students with parents in tow picking up supplies and gaining valuable information through extensive conversations with exhibitors, and in some cases adults came alone to gather material and obtain knowledge to share with their pupils or children. Laptop computers were made available to explore software that provided additional educational resources; and also participants were treated to a tour of the campus by UCLA's undergraduate students.

In all, it was a grand day on the UCLA campus with students, parents, exhibitors, volunteers and UCLA staff richer for the experience.
