Deputy Mayor of Education Visit to UCLA
On April 23, 2009, Deputy Mayor Miriam Scott Long of the City of Los Angeles visited UCLA. Deputy Mayor Long met with faculty and staff from the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSE&IS), Student Affairs, and the Center for Community Partnerships, to be briefed on the schools and programs that are making an impact on education, and youth and families, in the City of Los Angeles.
During her visit, Deputy Mayor Long learned about educational community resources being provided in partnership with community-based programs through the Center for Community Partnerships from Margaret Leal-Sotelo, Executive Director. Committed to engaging both, students and parents in the admissions process, the office of Student Affairs shared information about resources available in Admissions, Financial Aid, the Early Academic Outreach Program, and the Student Initiated Access Center .
Deputy Mayor Long was joined for lunch by the campus leadership of Student Affairs, the GSE&IS, the Center for Community Partnerships, Government and Community Relations and members of the Bruin Caucus Council. Among those present were, Vice Chancellor Janina Montero, Dean Aimée Dorr, Executive Director Margaret Leal-Sotelo, and Assistant Vice Chancellor Keith Parker .
The visit concluded with a meeting at the newly re-named UCLA Lab School . Long was provided with an overview of the Lab School by Principal James Kennedy. Other presentations included Center X, the Teacher Education Project, the UCLA Community School , and ArtsBridge. GSE&IS' faculty and staff discussed their emphasis to train teachers to work in urban environments and provide exposure to the arts. Staff also shared with Long UCLA's historic move to open an elementary school within LAUSD, the UCLA Community School , at the Ambassador Hotel site.
