A Ray of bruin volunteers with summer offerings
As summer break begins, many will go on vacation, spend time at the beach, or attend summer school. For several Bruins, it was time for public service, and making a difference in the lives of many. On Saturday, June 27, 2009, at the invitation of Mrs. Carol Block, the Office of Community and Local Government Relations coordinated volunteer efforts at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank.* Over thirty staff, alumni, faculty, and students volunteers gathered early, rolled up their sleeves, and worked throughout the morning. Made possible by the generous support of Councilmember Jack Weiss, bus transportation was provided for the volunteers.
Having assembled a similar group of volunteers during the holidays, the height of the volunteer season, Mrs. Block made a commitment to the Foodbank to return when volunteerism was usually low. Some of the participants included Alfredo Gonzalez, a new community college transfer student, who drove over 100 miles from Victorville to join the group, and Christopher Chiang, an incoming freshman. In the end, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Government and Community Relations Keith Parker led the team of volunteers with an enthusiastic round of the UCLA 8-Clap.
With the launch of the new UCLA Volunteer Center scheduled for September 21, 2009, it will offer a wide variety of volunteer opportunities to the campus. To learn more about the Volunteer Center , please email volunteer@ucla.edu .
