On July 16, Judy Chu (UCLA '74) was sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives. A Democrat from San Gabriel, Rep. Chu won the special election for the 32nd Congressional District to fill the vacancy left by former-Rep. Hilda Solis, who was appointed Secretary of Labor by President Obama. Rep. Chu is the first Chinese-American woman ever elected to Congress.
Rep. Chu earned her B.A. in mathematics at UCLA and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology. She was the 1991 recipient of the UCLA Alumni Association Public Service Award. She joins 11 other Bruins currently serving in Congress.
As a longtime advocate for families and education issues, Rep. Chu has been appointed to the Education and Labor Committee, where she will serve on the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Subcommittee and the Healthy Families and Communities Subcommittee.
"I am humbled and honored that the people of the 32nd District and San Gabriel Valley once again demonstrated their trust in me as their elected representative," said Rep. Chu in a statement. "I look forward to working hard for my constituents in Washington, using my fiscal expertise to help our nation emerge from our current financial crisis, improving our healthcare system and bringing much needed transportation and education dollars to the San Gabriel Valley."
Rep. Chu has served in public office for more 23 years. Most recently she was a member of the State Board of Equalization, where she served as chair since 2008. She was member of the California State Assembly from 2001-2006 and previously served on the Garvey School Board and the Monterey Park City Council. She also taught at Los Angeles City College and East Los Angeles College for 13 years. She is married to fellow Bruin, California Assemblyman Mike Eng (D-El Monte).
