Government & Community Relations Meet with Rep. Judy Chu

Dr. Judy Chu '74, (D-El Monte) recently became the first Chinese-American woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress. Chu was elected to fill the seat vacated by Rep. Hilda Solis when she was appointed U.S. Secretary of Labor.
On August 26, UCLA Federal Relations staff and Members of the Bruin Caucus met with Rep. Judy Chu to introduce her to the many UCLA community programs in the 32 nd Congressional district. Last year, UCLA collaborated with twenty-one community-based organizations in the District. Through its robust community partnerships, UCLA continues to bring world-class resources in K-12 preparation, health care, and social services to residents of the 32 nd District.
The meeting also provided UCLA staff and Bruin Caucus Members an opportunity to highlight the impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) at UCLA. To date, UCLA has received approximately 124 ARRA funded grants totaling about $ 51,455,280 dollars.
Dr. Chu, a long-time advocate and champion of education issues, was recently assigned to the House Education and Labor Committee. In this capacity, Dr. Chu has a role in shaping higher education programs that help low and middle-income students and families pay for college.
Dr. Chu holds a B.A. in mathematics from UCLA and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the California School of Psychology. She was the 1991 recipient of the UCLA Alumni Association Public Service Award. She joins 11 other Bruins currently serving in Congress.
